– PE Leadership Award – National 5 (SCQF levels 5)


Students should have a keen interest in Physical activity and a possible view to pursue sport as a future vocation. S5 and S6 pupils should be involved in leadership activities within mainstream school or other educational establishment.

The course is mainly practical but students will be expected to plan and deliver sessions and volunteer to help with sports clubs both within and out with school.


The PE Leadership Award consists of two Units:

  • An Introduction into Leadership (enabling learners to develop an understanding of what is meant by Leadership)
  • Leadership in practice (providing learners with a practical experience of taking a leading role).

Achievement of this Course gives automatic certification of the following:

-Complete Core Skill- Problem Solving at SCQF level 5

-Core Skill component -Working Co-operatively with Others at SCQF level 5

The aim of this course is to:

Give students who have a keen interest in PE, access to an educational platform which will develop their practical performance skills as well as their coaching and leadership skills. Students will be taught how to lead, motivate and communicate by organising safe and inclusive sporting activities for small groups of younger children within their community.

Candidates will learn about:

The meaning of leadership by finding out about different leadership styles, skills and qualities. They will be

able to consider, through comparing a variety of leaders, what makes an effective leader. Learners will be able to use this knowledge to help them consider their own potential for leadership. Learners will also be able to develop their leadership abilities as they will be given the opportunity to take on a leading role for an

activity. This Award will give learners an opportunity to explore the relationship between leadership and teamwork. As a consequence, this Award should promote opportunities which allow individuals to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

This course and qualification could lead to
